To live longer, healthier and more active, people at any age has to follow simple and clear

suggestions that cover all the 4 pillars of health: physical activity, nutrition, mindfulness, and

sleeping. Unfortunately, due to the intrinsic (e.g., daily-life habits) and extrinsic (e.g.,

environmental change) factors, people are far to have a healthy life and, thus, there is an

increase of chronic diseases, mental disorders, and premature death. In the literature, several

behavioural change theories have been defined and studied to help people to make a change in

their life. 

In this Ph.D. thesis, we will investigate how to design, implement, and validate a holistic recommender system inspired by behavioural change theories and taking into account the 4 pillars of health all together.

The recommender system will be designed with AI and ML capabilities able to personalize the experience to the kind of user considering working and daily-life habits, age, gender, health status, and preferences.

The candidates are requested to:

  • Have finished a degree in computer science. A double degree with Mathemathics will be highly valued.
  • Be eager to learn new mathematical models and technologies, specifically in the Big Data/Machine Learning area.
  • Have a good knowledge of Python.
  • Be able to work with development tools such as Git.
  • Be a proficient developer.
  • Have excellent marks.
  • Be a heavy worker and motivated by challenges.

The Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA-CSIC) offers a three and a half year scholarship for students pursuing a full-time PhD degree in Artificial Intelligence in the areas of multiagent systems, interaction models, and semantic alignment. 

The position, led by Dr Nardine Osman and Dr Marco Schorlemmer, is offered in the context of WENET, a high-profile international research project funded under the European Commission’s H2020 programme.

WeNet aims at providing a diversity-aware, machine-mediated paradigm of social relations. Technology has evolved to a point where humans from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences have an unprecedented ability to connect with each other. Yet technology does not in-and-by-itself provide support for developing and maintaining the social relationships that transcend geographical and cultural backgrounds. WeNet's goal is connecting people that can support each other, and the key is leveraging their diversity. The WeNet paradigm includes a family of computational diversity-aware models supporting human interaction: learning models, diversity-aware search, diversity alignment mechanisms that lift communication barriers, and diversity-aware incentive mechanisms that generates incentives for people to support each other. 

The IIIA-CSIC, located on the UAB campus, belongs to the Spanish National Research Council, Spain’s largest public institution devoted to research and technological development. The IIIA-CSIC is a leading research centre in Europe in the areas of multiagent systems, machine learning, and uncertainty reasoning. The Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA-CSIC) offers a three year pre-doctoral research position for students wanting to pursue a full-time PhD degree in Artificial Intelligence. The position will be led by Dr. Marco Schorlemmer and Prof. Enric Plaza.

Contemporary cognitive science has provided evidence that a large part of our creative reasoning and problem-solving processes are grounded on our bodily experience with the world. By means of this research position we aim at studying the implications this has for computational models of meaning, concept invention, creativity, and problem-solving in general (for further information see the book at http://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-65602-1).

Stipend: 
The annual salary is 21000EUR per year before taxes and includes health insurance. In addition, generous allowances are given to support presentation of work at international conferences and to attend seminars and tutorials. The Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA) offers nine four-year PhD scholarships for students pursuing a full-time PhD degree in Artificial Intelligence in the area of multiagent systems. More concretely the applicants will work on one or several of the following topics:
