On 9 April, the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA-CSIC) has published its first annual report to value the work carried out in 2020 despite the situation marked by the Covid-19 pandemic. This document also represents a review of its entire trajectory until it was one of the leading centres in Artificial Intelligence in Spain.
Beyond figures and graphs, the IIIA has wanted to guide this introspection work from an open and interdisciplinary perspective that includes all the aspects that make up the institute: personnel, science, transfer with companies and society, the transmission of knowledge, commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals...
After several months of work, the 2020 report of the centre highlights the following aspects.

1. 25 years where people come first
The human team has always been the engine of the IIIA. It has allowed it to evolve and become a consolidated institute in the field of AI. In the celebration of the 25th anniversary, with the participation of alumni, former researchers and friends of the centre, it was confirmed the belief in people and the need to create a pleasant, inclusive and close environment to accomplish a satisfactory job.

2. 100 PhD theses
The training of new generations of scientists has always been one of the fundamental tasks of the IIIA. In 2020, four theses were defended, the last becoming number 100. We have a hundred doctoral students from various origins and fields of research that, after passing through the centre, they have become researchers at prestigious universities, working for giant corporations such as Google or Amazon, or even manage their business projects.

3. Scientific Leadership
AI is a vast multidisciplinary scientific subject. The IIIA has always been very aware of being present in the primary scientific organizations specialized in AI. In this sense, IIIA researchers hold influential positions in prominent organizations and initiatives such as EurAI, ACIA, or AIHub. They are involved in the editor board of top AI journals. Furthermore, Artificial intelligence is considered one of CSIC's main strategic themes for the next decade. IIIA coordinated a white paper on AI in collaboration with 32 other research groups and over 200 researchers.

4. Our work with the SDGs
Since the origin of the IIIA, it has had a solid public inclination to investigate for society's benefit. But it is from 2015, with the design of the SDGs, when the institute's work is firmly committed to these, mainly with the objectives related to health, education, industry and smart cities. The fifteen projects in operation in 2020 have been proof of this. In the last decade, 111 projects have been brought out with a total budget of around 11 million euros, primarily public.

5.Towards the future
The document also wanted to be an optimistic and hopeful look at the future of the IIIA. Network collaboration with international and national research groups, the commitment to education at all levels, the dedication to dissemination to bring AI to the population, and the constant responsibility to knowledge and innovation are the IIIA's bases of leading a principal role in the AI field and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.
