The health domain has been an application area of artificial intelligence since the early years. Until very recently the use of artificial intelligence in the health domain has mostly focused on clinical data, including images, genetics, and clinical records. It has not been until recently that data-driven solutions in the health domain started to rely on patient-generated data coming from social networks, mobile and wearable devices. These include applications for classification, health outcome predictions, conversational agents, and recommender systems. This lecture will focus on the human factors and applications of artificial intelligence for empowering people living with chronic conditions. We will discuss the main technical challenges and their human factors implications for the building of actionable and trustworthy solutions that support patients, caregivers, and their clinicians.
Luís Fernández-Luque: My research focus has been on the adaptation of mobile and web technologies for patient support and public health. My scientific contributions in mobile health, which includes both mobile and wearable devices, are among the most cited and pioneering in the field dating back to the year 2006. I have substantial contributions in the creation and validation of Artificial Intelligence applications based on mobile and wearable technologies, including technologies such as deep learning and health recommender systems. My career has been always focused on the crossroads between computer science and behavioral change. I have ample experience in combining human factors research with artificial intelligence, that know-how is of crucial importance for the successful completion of the two aims of the project. My focus on human factors and data-driven applications dates back to my Ph.D. dissertation which focused on trustworthiness aspects of information retrieval of patient education.
As Chief Scientific Officer at Adhera Health (Palo Alto, CA, USA), I oversee the implementation of our research roadmap for our digital therapeutics' platform. Our evidence-based platform combines mobile technologies with artificial intelligence (Recommender Systems) to provide personalized patient support designed to improve the physical and mental wellbeing of people living with chronic conditions. In addition, I am a senior member of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society and Vice-President of the International Medical Informatics Association.
