The first generation of experts on Explainable Artificial Intelligence in Europe, including the IIIA, is about to arise as the NL4XAI research project comes to an end. Funded under the EU's Horizon 2020 programme to train eleven PhD candidates, this European consortium announces its final conference and industrial event, scheduled to take place on 24 May 2024 at the DesignLab of the University of Twente, The Netherlands. The event will serve as a pivotal platform to share the groundbreaking results achieved by the PhD candidates in the realm of Natural Language (NL) for Explainable AI (XAI), as well as to catalyze dynamic discussions about future directions and initiatives in the field.

We envision this event as a forum where PhD students can reflect on lessons learned and their contributions to NLXAI, and where academics and industry practitioners can exchange ideas about the state-of-the-art and the future of this important field.

The conference will commence with a morning session featuring enlightening talks by distinguished speakers from both academia and industry. Speakers are:

  • Maryam Amir Haeri, Assistant Professor at the University of Twente, presenting on Fair AI.
  • Joop Snijder, Head of Research Center AI at Info Support, discussing Explainable AI in Industry.
  • Meike Nauta, Senior Data Scientist and AI Consultant at Datacation, delving into the Future of XAI.

In the afternoon, attendees will engage in an interactive session where the NL4XAI PhD candidates, along with participants from related projects, will share and demonstrate their latest research outcomes on explainable AI. Representatives from industry and other organizations interested in AI are also invited to present their organizations during this session.

Join us in shaping the future of AI at the NL4XAI Final Conference, where we will unveil all the details of the event and promote lively discussions about further steps and actions. Attendees will have the opportunity to visit the DesignLab of the University of Twente, a facility designed to bridge the gap between science and society through design. This inspirational setting will host presentations of all ESR projects, keynote talks by visiting scientists, and a dedicated industrial session featuring demonstration booths showcasing project results and associated demos. Registrations and further information about the event are available on the NL4XAI "Shaping the Future of AI" event page.

H2020 Training Network

NL4XAI is funded by the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, through a Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant, in the framework of the European Union’s bet for Explainable Artificial Intelligence. The network is coordinated by the research team at the Research Centre in Intelligent Technology of the University of Santiago de Compostela (CiTIUS-USC), headed by Senén Barro. NL4XAI is a joint academic-industry research network, that brings together 21 beneficiaries and partners from six different European countries (France, Malta, Poland, Spain, The Netherlands, and UK). The partners correspond to two national research institutions (IIIA-CSIC, CNRS), ten universities (University of Aberdeen, University of Dundee, L-Universitá ta’ Malta, Delft University of Technology, Utrecht University, University of Twente, Warsaw University of Technology, Université de Lorraine, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Universitat Autonòma de Barcelona, Maastricht University) and eight private companies (Indra, Accenture, Orange, Wizenoze, Arria, InfoSupport, INDITEX and Trivago).

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Grant Agreement No. 860621.
