This award acknowledges the contributions of outstanding researchers in the field of autonomous agents, and is granted each year to one individual whose work is influencing and setting the direction for the field. There is a $1,000 prize.The selection committee for the ACM/SIGAI Autonomous Agents Research Award has announced that Professor Carles Sierra is the recipient of the 2019 award. Professor Sierra is Vice-Director of the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA) of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). He has made seminal contributions to research on negotiation and argumentation, computational trust and reputation, and artificial social systems. His work has pursued answers to fundamental agent research questions: how to interact and with whom, and how to design frameworks for agent interaction. This work played a significant role in establishing the foundations for these questions and motivating further research across the community. Prof. Sierra has also served the autonomous agents research community in a variety of roles, including General Chair of the AAMAS conference, its Program Chair and Editor in Chief of the JAAMAS journal.

Ramon López de Mántaras, Director de nuestro Instituto, recibe el Premio Nacional "Julio Rey Pastor" de Investigación 2018 en Matemáticas y Tecnologias de la Información por ser pionero en el estudio de la Inteligencia Artificial y por su liderazgo internacional en esta disciplina.  Al conocer la concesión del premio, el investigador López de Mántaras ha señalado: “Haber recibido este reconocimiento en un momento en que la Inteligencia Artificial es una tema del que todo el mundo habla es sin duda importante, no solamente para mí personalmente sino sobre todo para mi instituto, el IIIA. Tanto la Comunidad Europea como España están preparando estrategias en Inteligencia Artificial  y espero que sean muy ambiciosas, ya que está en juego el futuro de nuestras economías”.

López de Mántaras ha añadido: “También quiero enfatizar que sin el esfuerzo de mis estudiantes y colaboradores pasados y presentes, tanto del Insituto de Investigación en Inteligencia Artificial como de otros países, en particular de EEUU, Francia, Alemania, Australia y Brasil, nunca habría obtenido este premio. Personalmente hace tiempo que digo que los premios científicos deberían darse sobre todo a colectivos de personas. La ciencia moderna no se hace por personas aisladas, el trabajo colaborativo es absolutamente crucial para progresar. Los premios individuales deberían reservarse para científicos en las etapas iniciales de sus carreras ya que ello daría un impulso muy importante a sus carreras”.

Los Premios Nacionales de Investigación, creados en 1982, son concedidos por el Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades y suponen el reconocimiento más importante de España en el ámbito de la investigación científica. Tienen como objetivo distinguir el mérito de aquellos investigadores e investigadoras de nacionalidad española que estén realizando una labor destacada en campos científicos de relevancia internacional y que contribuyan excepcionalmente al avance de la ciencia, al mejor conocimiento del ser humano y su convivencia, a la transferencia de tecnología y al progreso de la Humanidad.

At the opening ceremony of IJCAI-17on August 22 in Melbourne, the Donald E. Walker Distinguished Service Award will be given to Ramon Lopez de Mantaras, Research Professor of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and Director of the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute of the CSIC. Professor Lopez de Mantaras is recognized for his substantial contributions, as well as his extensive service to the field of Artificial Intelligence throughout his career.

For her thesis: "On modal expansions of t-norm based logics with rational constants", supervised by Félix Bou, Frances Esteva and Lluis Godo. The award ceremony will take place during the gala dinner, on September the 13th, 2017, of the forthcoming EUSFLAT 2017 Conference which will be held in Warsaw.

At the 2017 World Congress of the International Fuzzy Systems Association (IFSA) that took place in Otsu, Japan, Prof. Francesc Esteva was selected as IFSA Fellow

The paper "An Argument-based Creative Assistant for Harmonic Blending " by Maximos Kaliakatsos-Papakostas, Roberto Confalonieri (IIIA postdoc), Joseph Corneli, Asterios Zacharakis and Emilios Cambouropoulos, has been distinguished as the best paper of the 7th International Conference on Computational Creativity, held in Paris from June 27 to July 1 2016.

The prestigious journal "Fuzzy Sets and Systems" has published a special issue to celebrate the 70th birthday of Prof. Francesc Esteva.

The PhD Thesis "Facing the challenge of automated negotiation with humans" by Angela Fabregues has received the "Outstanding PhD Award" from the Computer Science Department of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) for theses defended in 2012 and 2013.

The purpose of the competition is to steer the research in the area bilateral multi-issue closed negotiation. Closed negotiation, when opponents do not reveal their preferences to each other, is an important class of real-life negotiations.

The PhD Theses: "Intelligent Generation and Control of Interactive Virtual Worlds" by Tomas Trescak, and "Social Norms for Self-policing Multi-agent Systems and Virtual Societies" by Dani Villatoro, have received the "Outstanding PhD Award" from the Computer Science Department of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). These awards are given to outstanding PhD theses defended within the period 2009-2012.

He is the seventh IIIA scientist elected ECCAI Fellow. The IIIA is the European organization that has more ECCAI fellows

EUSFLAT, the European Society of Fuzzy Logic and Technology has awarded the 2012 Best PhD Award to the former IIIA PhD student Marco Cerami.

The Spanish Computer Society has awarded the 2012 "Jose Garcia Santesmases" National Computer Science Award to Ramon Lopez de Mantaras.

Josep Lluis Arcos and Joan Serra together with two collaborators from the Max Plank Institute in Germany participated to the annual MIREX international evaluation framework for Music Information Retrieval algorithms, where participants submit their algorithms as binary executables and they run such algorithms on different public and pivate datasets.

The paper "Automated Generation of Cross-Domain Analogies via Evolutionary Computation" by A. G. Baydin, R. Lopez de Mantaras, and S. Ontanon, has been selected as the "Best Student Paper" of the Third International Conference on Computational Creativity. This award is presented by the Cognitive Science Society and the Association for Computational Creativity.

Daniel Villatoro's PhD thesis "Social Norms for Self-policing Multi-agent Systems and Virtual Societies" has been awarded the "IFAAMAS-11 Victor Lesser Distinguished Dissertation Award". This thesis has been done at the IIIA under the supervision of Dr. Jordi Sabater

The paper "Distinguished algebraic semantics for t-norm based fuzzy logics: Methods and algebraic equivalencies", by Cintula, P., Esteva, F., Gispert, J., Godo, L., Montagna, F., Noguera, C., is the most cited paper of the journal "Annals of Pure and Applied Logic" since 2007.

Ramon Lopez de Mantaras has been selected as the ninth recipient of the AAAI Robert S. Engelmore Memorial Lecture Award, sponsored by IAAI and AI Magazine. The award was presented to him at the opening ceremony of the AAAI/IAAI-2011 in San Francisco. As part of the award, Ramon delivered an invited talk at this year’s AAAI/IAAI Innovative Applications of Artificial Intelligence Conference on August 10 in San Francisco (http://www.aaai.org/Conferences/AAAI/aaai11.php). The PhD Theses: "Action Selection in Cooperative Robot Soccer using Case-Based Reasoning" by Raquel Ros, "Ensemble Case-Based Learning for Multi-Agent Systems" by Santi Ontañon, and "Contributions to Record Linkage for Disclosure Risk Assessment" by Jordi Nin, have received the "Outstanding PhD Award" from the Computer Science Department of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). A total of 11 theses, among the 50+ PhD theses defended within the period 2005 to 2008, have received this distinction.

Vicenç Torra has been elected Fellow of ECCAI. The IIIA has now 6 ECCAI Fellows and is the only european institution having 6 ECCAI Fellows.

Francesc Esteva has been selected Honorary Member of the European Society for Fuzzy Logic and Technology (EUSFLAT) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to fuzzy and many-valued logics and for his tireless activities to advance the EUSFLAT society as a
co-founder of the society, its first president (1997-2001), and a
faithful long-time member. He is the first member to receive this distinction.

The IIIA members: Isaac Pinyol, Dani Villatoro, Ismel Brito and Jordi Sabater have been awarded the "Best Student software Award" at the AAMAS-2009 (International Joint Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems) held in Budapest.

The IIIA members Armando Robles and Pablo Noriega have been awarded the "Best Industrial Software Award" at the
AAMAS-2009 (International Joint Conference on Autonomous Agents and
Multiagent Systems) held in Budapest.

The University of Salamanca has awarded the "2007-2008 Outstanding PhD
thesis Prize" to Enrico Marchioni for his PhD entitled: "Functional
definability issues in logics based on triangular norms", done under the supervision of Prof. Lluis Godo (IIIA) and Prof. Mara manzano (Univ. of Salamanca).

Pedro Meseguer has been elected Fellow of ECCAI. The IIIA has now 5 ECCAI Fellows and is the only institution having 5 ECCAI Fellows.

Angela Fabregues, a PhD student at the IIIA, is one of the 12 outstanding young women recipients of The Google Europe Anita Borg Scholarship 2007.

Claudio Baccigalupo and Enric Plaza have received the Best Application Paper Award of the 2007 International Conference on Case-Based Reasoning.

Lluís Godo has been elected ECCAI Fellow.

Angela Fabregues, a PhD student at the IIIA, has been awarded one of the 12 european Anita Borg Scholarships. Google awards these scholarships to encourage female students to excel in their studies and become active role models and leaders.

IIIA PhD students Àngela Fàbregues and Sindhu Joseph have been selected as finalists for the Google Europe Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship 2007 for female students.
